This project entails the renovation and two-storey extension of a charming Californian bungalow in the inner North suburb of Coburg. The house embraces the philosophy that renewing existing structures is an important part of a sustainable architecture.

The original house, a white weatherboard home with rich dark timber interior features, is a much-loved home of our clients. The brief developed around the idea of family gatherings in the Kitchen and Dining. The extension centres around an initial sketch of a generous kitchen and Dining room. These areas seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor spaces to create a garden-like atmosphere in the heart of the home. The goal was to envelop the kitchen in a private garden at the rear, fostering a harmonious connection between the home and its natural surroundings.

Our design process began with a thorough investigation into the site’s unique character. The house’s historical essence, paired with the clients’ vision, guided our approach. By preserving the existing structure and introducing a contemporary extension, we aimed to honor the bungalow’s heritage while adding a new chapter to its story. The result is a harmonious blend of past and present, where every meal and gathering is enriched by the beauty of the surrounding garden.
